Comment moderation test
News| No Comments »In an attempt to block the flood of spammy comments, I’ve now enabled comment moderation (and, hooray, disabled the annoying comment captcha). This means I’ll need to review your comments, though thanks to the way the system works, only your first comment will have to be manually approved (I hope).
You’ll see a message to this effect when you submit a comment; I’ll do my best to get to the queue multiple times per hour for today, just to see how it goes.
I know this isn’t ideal, but it seems better than the broken captcha system that resets the captcha characters every time you preview.

Script the Login window through Apple Remote Desktop
News| No Comments »After trying to script the login window multiple ways, I have come up with the perfect solution; this works 100% of the time when tested under OS X 10.4 and higher. We use this to log in computer(s) through Apple Remote Desktop by sending this script to computers sitting at the login window. This is great in a computer lab situation, where you may need to log in all the computers at once.
This method requires the username and password fields, but as long as you have a list of users with “Other…” displayed in the login window, it will work fine. Here’s the script:
10.6: Fix a file copy issue with SMB, XBMC, and Xbox
News| No Comments »
Snow Leopard works pretty well for Windows File Sharing (aka SMB), but sometimes, clients can’t copy files larger than 2GB. My setup is Mac OS X 10.6.2 (desktop) with a bunch of EyeTV recordings, and an Xbox modified to run XBMC. OS X shares the recordings using Windows Sharing (SMB). Large recordings will abruptly stop playing at the 2GB mark. Oddly, these same recordings can be copied entirely to Linux clients, so it’s definitely the combination of XBMC and Xbox and OS X.
The problem is due to 64-bit locks on 32-bit filesystems. Take a look at /var/log/samba/log.smbd for messages like this:
posix_fcntl_getlock: WARNING: lock request at offset 49543704, length 65534 returned an Invalid argument error. This can happen when using 64 bit lock offsets on 32 bit NFS mounted file systems.

10.6: Run 32-bit screen savers in the background in 10.6
News| No Comments »
SaveHollywood is not ready to work on Snow Leopard. Apparently this extends to any software that runs older screen savers in the background — they’ll appear with a system message reading “not compatible.”
If I open System Preferences’ Screen Savers panel as usual, my system tells me that old screen savers are not compatible. But if I open System Preferences in 32-bit mode, they seem to work (in the panel, but not always when playing). So I tried the Terminal command from this older hint, but had the same problem. Finally I searched how to run a screen saver in 32-bit mode from Terminal. For that, you do this:
arch -i386 AppToRun
So to run an older screen saver in the background, you’d use this co…
