10.6: Avoid slow and CPU-intensive Time Machine backups

News| No Comments »

Snow Leopard only hintOn my Mac, Time Machine backups sometimes slow to a crawl, and stay like that for hours on end. After some digging, I discovered that Finder is often the culprit, and quitting Finder seems not to have any adverse impact on the backup — but it does speed it up by an order of magnitude. Here’s what happened in my case…

I had been making an initial Time Machine backup over a network. Initial write speeds were over 5mbps, but an hour later, it was down to 100kbps — and CPU usage went up to almost 90%. I left it this way for four hours and there was no improvement — at this rate, the backup would take a week.

A look at Activity Monitor showed almost all the CPU usage due to Finder, and a look at the ‘Open Files and Ports’ by Finder showed it accessing the Applications folder in the backup, crawling through all the application packages over a…

Follow both sides of a threaded discussion in Mail

News| No Comments »

Mail’s View » Organize by Thread option is a great way of seeing one side of an email conversation. Until recently, however, I didn’t realize that I could see both sides of that discussion. By selecting multiple mailboxes in the left panel (as described in this hint), Organize by thread will interleave all messages in all selected mailboxes.

So, for instance, with both Inbox and Sent selected, I can see the organized messages from both sources. If I add Drafts to the selection, I can see what I wanted to say in the its full context. It’s a great way of seeing both sides of a long-running discussion in Mail.

Permanently hide the Stocks app icon on iPhone

News| No Comments »

If you’re like me and have no use for the Stocks application, I’m sure you’ve wished of a method to remove it so it doesn’t take up home screen real estate. A few months back, I searched for a method but I found none that suited my needs. I wanted something that would not require a jailbreak, and I wanted the change to be permanent. I remembered that disabling an application through the Restrictions panel removes it from the home screen, so I figured adding Stocks to the list of restricted apps should have the same result.

Note that this hint requires connecting your iPhone to a Windows machine, either directly or through a virtualization application such as Fusion or Parallels.
This could be done lots of ways, but I’ll describe a couple. Keep in mind this is an iPhone hint more than a Mac hint, so unfortuanely it requires some Windos-only software. Unfortunately, I’ve found no comparable Mac version — if anyo…
