Disable Keyboard Setup Assistant when using a KVM switch
News| No Comments »A previous hint suggested a hack for disabling the Keyboard Setup Assistant which has an annoying habit of popping up when using a KVM switch (whether a hardware switch such as the excellent Belkin Flip, or a software one such as teleport with a headless Mac). However, there is a less drastic solution that takes just one click and works with both 10.4 and 10.5 (it may also work on 10.6, but I can’t test that myself).
Just click the red close button on the Keyboard Setup Assistant window, as per this Apple Support Document, and it shouldn’t pop up again for that (virtual) keyboard. If you do need the Setup Assistant again, you can summon it using the Keyboard System Preferences pane.
Note that you may need to plug a mouse directly …
10.6: Set time of deletion for files placed in the Trash
News| No Comments »
To make it easier to retrieve accidentally-deleted items from the trash, you can use an Automator workflow and the third-party Automator action Touch Files to create a “date deleted” time stamp on files placed in the trash. Here’s how:
- Download the Automator action and unzip it.
- Open Automator and import this action (File » Import Actions and navigate into the Touch Files folder to find the Action).
- Create a new Folder Action workflow in Automator.
- Click the Choose Folder pop-up at the top of the workflow, and select Other. When the file choice dialog appears, type Shift-Command-G, then type ~/.Trash/ and click Choose.
- Drag the Touch Files action (you can find it under Files & Folders) into your workflow. I…

Create distributable slideshow screen savers
News| No Comments »I like to create slideshow screen savers, and I do so using OS X’s .slideSaver package format. The advantage of using this format is that you can redistribute your slideshow among friends or family — that’s why I tried my hand at it. Now, making a screen saver is a bit less easy in 10.6 because you have to add the LANG.lproj folders, but here’s the rundown for creating these packages.
To make a slideshow screen saver, you do not need a separate application to compile. All you need will be right here. (You might want Property List Editor from the XCode developer tools to build the .plist files, but you can use TextEdit to do that.)
First, create a folder in any convenient place. Title it the name of the screen saver (Car Pictures, for example) and press Return.
To understand the package contents, you must have three files in that folder: an Info.plist file to identify it, a version.plist file to identify the version, and a folder…
