Preserve photo timestamp when exporting from iPhoto

News| No Comments »

When photos are exported from iPhoto using the Export function, all the photos will get the current date/time stamp. But if you use any of these photos in an app that organizes them by date/time, then the organization will be lost. For example, I export a set of images from iPhoto to view in my Wii’s photo tool, but those images are organized by date.

To fix this problem, I took advantage of the EXIF data in the JPEG images from my digital camera. To batch change a large set of images, I use the open source command-line tool jhead, which is available as a pre-compiled Intel binary (source code is also available from the website, or via Fink).

Install Final Cut Studio on Macs with less than 128MB VRAM

News| No Comments »

While it may not run too well, it is possible to get Final Cut Studio 3 to install with less than the ‘required’ 128MB VRAM.

Control-click on the installer package alias and choose Show Original from the pop-up menu. Control-click the original installer and choose Show Package Contents from the pop-up menu. Navigate into the Contents » Resources folder. Control-click on the Requirements Checker and choose Show Package Contents from the pop-up menu. Navigate into the Contents » Resources folder, and then open minsys.plist with Property List Editor, the default (requires Xcode).

Change the value of AELMinimumVRAM from 128 to 64 (or less if you have even less VRAM). The installer will now run normally.

After installing, Control-click on the Final Cut Pro.app in /Applications and choose Show Package Contents from the pop-up menu. Navigate into Contents » Resources folder. Open the mimsys.plist file found there, a…

Switch Financial Institution on existing account in Quicken

News| No Comments »

My Wamu accounts are now accessible at Chase.com, and I needed to change the Financial Institution setting in Quicken, but I couldn’t because Quicken was giving me all sorts of weird behavior (telling me that Chase requires exactly a four-digit PIN, errors during download, etc.) Just a lot of weird stuff.

I was finally able to do this while testing out whether a new account would work. To change the Financial Institution, click New in the Quicken account list to set up a new account. Choose Chase as the Financial Institution, then Online to set up the account. Put in your Chase.com credentials, and it will look for your accounts from Chase.

Here’s the cool part: when you are shown the list of accounts Quicken has found, you can choose to skip the account, create a new account in Quicken, or use an existing account. This effectively allows you to change the Financial Institution without all the problems you get using the Edit account dialog.

Obviously, this…
