One possible fix for broken RSS in Mail
News| No Comments »The symptoms: Mail refuses to accept any new RSS feeds. Not by clicking the link "subscribe in Mail" when Safari displays an RSS feed. Nor by taking the URL and copy/pasting it into the address box when manually adding an RSS feed in Mail.
I went through all the usual motions, the most radical being to quit Mail and Safari, delete everything that smells like PubSub and RSS in my ~/Library folder, then log out and reboot. To no avail.
At last I deleted Mail’s "Envelope Index" in ~/Library/Mail. As expected, Mail asked to rebuild mailboxes upon the next start-up. Once that was done, RSS feeds worked again in Mail.
Due to the history of how I tackled the problem, I cannot tell whether deleting Envelope Index alone would have solved the issue, or whether the combination of previously deleting RSS and PubSub prefs, cache, … is required to restore Mail’s RSS capabilities.
Adding and using keyboard shortcuts in the Print dialog box
News| No Comments »Generally I have found that added keyboard shortcuts for the drop-down menu in the Print dialog (such as in this hint) only work only for the items above the dividing line. As Apple notes, “you can create keyboard shortcuts only for existing menu commands.” And all the commands below the dividing line are transient menu items, as they are there only because they are in the PDF Services folder, in the Library folder of the user or the system. If you take them out of there, they will disappear from the Print dialog drop-down. Hence it seems that they are not considered available for keyboard access by the system.
Except there is one way that I have just now discovered to get this to work.
You can use the Tab key to cycle through to the drop-down menu. Now you can use the down arrow to open the menu. At this point, you can use your shortcuts for items below the line. Two things to note when usin…
An AppleScript app to force Setup Assistant to run
News| No Comments »There have been past hints (in 10.5; from 2001) about how to force the initial Setup Assistant to run again, but these methods were both very manual and required booting in Single User mode.
I’ve created an AppleScript app — Clean Install.app — that will allow you to ‘clean’ any attached OS X volume (other than the current startup volume). The script removes all the home folders, and the netinfo database (Tiger) or user info plist’s (Leopard+), then forces the initial Setup Assistant the next time the ‘cleaned’ volume is booted. The application is completely written in AppleScript and can be edited, so feel free to make whatever customizations and modifications you want.
This allows you to take a fresh OS X install, add any software and run any updates you’d like, and then give it to …
