10.5: One possible cause of huge Time Machine backups

News| No Comments »

I have been using a Time Capsule for a substantial amount of time now, without major issue. But recently, I started to annoyed by huge, repeated hourly backups. For example, Time Machine would backup 1.6GB, although it seemed I hadn’t done major file modifications since previous backup. And, more noticeably, a second, huge 1.6GB to 1.7GB backup would follow immediately, without even the hour delay between the two.

I started to scrutinize the Console log, with no hints to the cause of the repeated huge backups. Actually, I couldn’t find any hint, because I filtered console logs using the search field with “backup” string. I accidently ran into the solution when I forgot filtering.

Although I am no console expert, I could read repeated references to the TechTool Protection tool, whch reminded me I had installed it recently. In the TechTool Protection System Preferences panel…

Want to read a bunch of related e-mails without switching to Mail.app? You can:

Start by using Spotlight to search for whatever subjects or recipients define the group of messages you want to read, then Show All the results. Next, click on the plus-sign (+) option. You should now see the search criteria Kind Is Any. Click and hold on Any and then choose Other. In the text field, type Mail Message. Now click on Save and give the search whatever name you wish; make sure that Add To Sidebar is checked. Select this saved search in your sidebar, and click on the Cover Flow button at the top of the Finder window.

You may have to enlarge your Finder window to make the messages readable. You could use QuickLook to read them at a larger size.

Change an iTunes movie rating

News| No Comments »

In iTunes, you can change many of the tags associated with a movie. But you can’t change its rating (G, PG, etc.)–at least not with iTunes itself. But you can do it with a simple little app called MetaX.

After downloading and installing the app, right-click on the movie you want to re-rate in iTunes and select Show in Finder from the context menu. In the Finder, right-click on the movie file, select Open With, and choose MetaX.app from the list.

In MetaX, you will see a drop-down menu for Rating. Change it to whatever you want, then click on the Write button on the toolbar. (Note that, depending on the size of the movie file, you may have to select its Preferences -> General -> Enable Support for Large Files first.)

MetaX will proceed to rewrite the rating tag (and any other metadata you changed); this may take a while. When you go back to iTunes, the movie’s rating should be updated.
