Guest editors this week…
News| No Comments »I’ll be away from Mac OS X Hints this week. In my absence, we’ll have a couple of Macworld staffers — Heather Kelly and Dan Miller — posting the daily hints. Please be kind to them; this is their first attempt at running the site!
I’ll be back in the editor’s chair starting on Monday, July 20th.

Create a stack of recent BBEdit items
News| No Comments »I work in BBEdit a lot, so I wanted an easy way to access files I’d recently edited in it. To do so, I opened my home folder’s Library/Preferences/com.barebones.bbedit.PreferenceData folder in the Finder. From there, I dragged-and-dropped the Recent Files & Favorites folder to my dock. It was now a regular stack, populated only with recent BBEdit files.
To change the number of items in that stack, from within BBEdit, open Preferences and select “Application” from left-hand pane. There, change the number for the “Remember the __ most recently used items” setting to whatever you want.
Note: If you use TextWrangler instead, you can do the same thing dragging and dropping the /Preferences » com.barebones.textwrangler.PreferenceData » Recent Files & Favorites folder to the Dock.
10.5: View Author in Mail’s RSS Reader
News| No Comments »
This probably isn’t a hint so much as a, “Hey, I just figured something out”: In Apple Mail’s built-in RSS reader, you can view the author of a story in an RSS feed: Right-click on the bar with column-headers on it (Subject, Date, etc) and select “Author.” Adjust the columns to fit your preferences.
As far as I can tell, this is the only time you can select that Author headling; if you’re in a regular mailbox, it is grayed out.
Quick add currently-playing track to an iTunes playlist
News| No Comments »Oftentimes when I’m listening to music in my library, randomly or in the “recently added” list, I’ll think to myself “wow — that’s a great love song, I need to add that to my ‘lovesongs’ playlist…” But I am too lazy (or busy) to switch to iTunes and drag it over. So I created an AppleScript that’s triggered by a keyboard shortcut to add the currently-playing iTunes track to a playlist I specify.
Features:
- Prompts you for the playlist name
- Will create the playlist if it doesn’t exist
- Will not add the track if it’s already on the designated playlist
- Designed to be executed with a hotkey “trigger” event (keyboard shortcut) with Quicksilver or some other shortcut program. See how-to on adding keyboard hotkeys with Quicksilver
- Unobtrusively shows the result with a growl message
