Read iPhone/iPod touch screen while lying down

News| No Comments »

The iPhone (and iPod touch) automatically switch the screen between landscape and portrait mode when you tilt the device. This can be annoying if you want to read a web page or mail message when reclining in a horizontal posture on your side (while, say, lying in bed).

But you can ‘lock’ the iPhone/iPod touch in landscape mode by turning it upside down slowly. This is perfect for reading while lying down.

Hold the device in an upright position (default portrait mode). Tilt the device ninety degrees in either direction (switches to landscape mode). Tilt the device another ninety degrees in the same direction, so that it’s now upside down. The screen orientation stays in landscape mode, and the text is now aligned for reading on your side in a horizontal position.

Use a G5 as headless port/drive extender and MIDI server

News| No Comments »

The new Macbook Unibody has about five ports. In my case, all of them are full all the time. Unless you buy a hub, why not use that defunct G5 for additional ports and devices? You may save some energy by not relying on a large number of external devices (keyboard, monitor, hard drives, etc.) or AC power. I was also tired of the issues with a USB powered Oxygen 8 keyboard from M-Audio. Using my G5, the VNC access is actually somewhat tolerable for light operations at reasonable resolutions. If you have your Mac configured with a SATA II card and an internal drive mounting system, you can have access to more drives at decent speeds.

These instructions cover setting up a FireWire 800 link, a MIDI Network Link, VNC access using Vine Server, which is much faster than ARD. Also, you can easily use your G5 as a bridge to connect to two-pin devices (most video-cameras). Latency is minimal and the data path is more than sufficient, if all other interfaces are disabled it is also some…

Migrate contacts from Verizon phone to iPhone

News| No Comments »

Here’s one way to move contact from a Verizon phone to an iPhone. First back up your Verizon contacts using Backup Assistant (a small app you download using GetItNow). After running the app to back up, log onto your Verizon account, click the My Services tab, then click the My Contacts link.

This will show you all your contacts. Click the Print Address Book. This exports them into a single window ready for printing. But rather than print (or after printing as a backup), choose Save As and save the file as text. Open this in a text editor (it wouldn’t open in Pages, so I opened first in TextEdit, then copied and pasted).

From there, you can do some replacing and deleting until you have a tab-delimited list which, voila, can be imported into Address Book and synced with your iPhone.
