Remembering Michael Crichton
News| No Comments »I was very saddened today to read of the passing of Michael Crichton. What, you may ask, does this have to do with macosxhints.com? More than you might think — Michael was a big-time Mac user and early OS X adopter (rare for someone who relied on their machine to make a living!).
Back in 2001, when this site was just a time-intensive hobby, I didn’t have any ads, and relied on donations to cover my hosting costs. Michael Crichton was one of the early donors, and in addition to his check, he sent me a very nice card and autographed book.
His passing today hit me pretty hard, and the best way I could think to handle it was to write about what he meant to me, both personally and relative to this site’s history. So rest in peace, Michael — you entertained millions, and you will be missed.

10.5: How to pull Time Capsule data for dead drives
News| No Comments »
My secondary hard drive died suddenly and wouldn’t mount. I figured this wouldn’t be a problem since I have Time Machine backing up to a Time Capsule. So I fired up Time Machine, but I can’t browse to my second hard drive since it does not exist on my computer. Even if the drive was on my computer and malfunctioning, Time Machine would try to restore data to that same faulty drive. So, what to do?
Mount the disk image stored in Time Capsule (skip the verification), browse to the most recent date, and there you’ll see a folder for every hard drive on your system. You can recover your data from there and put it in any available drive.
Download links from external sources in Safari
News| No Comments »It should be well-known that you can option-click a link in Safari to force it to download. This is very helpful for image, PDF, and text file links which would otherwise display in Safari. What about when you get a link in an email or other document? Option-click in Mail doesn’t download it; it just loads it in your default browser as if normally clicked.
Try this instead. Select the link in Mail and copy it. In Mail, just Control-click and select Copy Link from the menu. In a text-based apps, you’ll have to select the whole link and copy it, unless it provides a similar link discovery feature. Open a new window in Safari and paste the link into the address box, then oress Option-Return instead of a plain Return. Safari will behave like you Option-clicked the URL. I’m sure this could be automated somehow, but I’m too lazy to figure that stuff out!
