What iDVD ‘08 Compression Options Really Mean

News| No Comments »

Every time I’ve used iDVD ‘08 and reached the point of checking the Project Info pane’s Encoding options, they never make complete sense, even after searching the web for answers. I’m in the process of transferring my Laserdiscs to DVDs and have now built up enough experience that I think I’ve figured this all out. Here’s what seems to be going on.

The gist of the confusion about encoding is that the word “quality” is used in two different ways. There is the quality of the rendered video to be burned on the DVD, which is really what is important. But, unfortunately, the word quality also appears in the naming of the compression algorithms used, Best Quality and Professional Quality. This latter use is ill-advised, because the amount of compression applied to your video may or may not affect the quality of the video you end up with.

We all understand the meaning of picture quality, and iDVD ‘08 usefully indicates final DVD video quality via a color grading scale, from g…

Make iPhone stay in UTC Regardless of Current Time Zone

News| No Comments »

For international travelers who cross many times zones each day, such as those in aviation and those in the military, it is common to live by Coordinated Universal Time (also known as UTC, Z or Zulu, and GMT or Greenwich Mean Time). An earlier hint noted that the iPhone can display UTC in the World Clock, but you can also set your iPhone to stay on UTC.

To change to UTC you must first select Settings > General > Date & Time. Turn off Set Automatically. You should also turn on 24-Hour Time, which is optional but is most likely used by anyone who needs to live by UTC. When you turn off Set Automatically, you are shown the Time Zone option. Select Time Zone and type in UTC in the search box. Select UTC from results list. The iPhone will now stay on UTC regardless of your location in the world.

[kirkmc adds: No iPhone here, but on the iPod touch you can set the time zone to UTC if…

Install Aperture 2 with 256 MB RAM

News| No Comments »

I decided one day to try out Aperture 2 and found that it won’t run on machines with less than 1 GB of RAM. Tinkering around, I stumbled onto some files that can fix this.

First you need Aperture 2 or the trial version from Apple. Once you have it, you need to drag the Aperture package and packages folder to the Desktop. Right-click the package and choose Show Package Contents. Open Contents and right-click Aperture (trial).dist; choose Open With and then Other. In the window that displays, choose TextEdit (or your favorite text editor) and scroll all the way to the bottom of the window. Now slowly scroll back up untill you see:

function checkRAMRequirement(RAM)     var requiredRAM = (RAM * 1012 * 1012);  var actualRAM = system.sysctl('hw.memsize');

Change the required RAM to:

function checkRAMRequirement(RAM)        var requiredRAM = (RAM * 256 * 256);    var actualRAM = system.sysctl('hw.mem...
