10.5: Easily use Front Row on second display or TV

News| No Comments »

If you like to use Front Row on your attched TV (or second display), it’s a bit of a hassle — Front Row plays on the monitor with the menu bar, so you have to drag it back-and-forth before and after using Front Row. To solve this problem, I wrote a free little application called TV Row that will automatically let you see Front Row on your TV (or second monitor). Of course, you need to have the TV or second display connected to your Mac first, but that’s it. What does it do? TV Row will let you automatically play Front Row on you second monitor or TV. And when you close Front Row, with one press of a button it will set your first display as primary display again.

The application is built on AppleScript and a free Unix program called cscreen, which is included in the package.

10.4: Resurrect the 10.5 Movies widget in Tiger

News| No Comments »

Recently the Leopard Movies widget, which Steve demoed along with Leopard, stopped working in Tiger. Leopard’s built-in Movies widget continues to function, while in Tiger, it gives an error of “invalid zip code.” You can make this widget function once again in 10.4.

Navigate to /Library/Widgets and find the Movies widget. Control-click on the widget and choose Show Package Contents from the pop-up menu. Then open parser.js in your favorite text editor, and replace all occurrences of A99D3D1A-774C-4914-9E3B-18645117428A with DE7E251E-7758-40A4-98E0-87557E9F31F0 and save. Close any open movie widget in Dashboard, then re-open it. Now it works.

Add custom folders to the iLife Media Browser

News| No Comments »

There are times when it would be nice to have your own folders in the Media Browser in iLife ‘08 applications. In the Media Browser, however, there is no apparent way to add folders, but with a little trick, you can do just that.

In the Finder, open whatever folder you want to add to the Media Browser. Then start an iLife application and show the Media Browser (View » Show Media Browser). Open the Pictures tab, then drag-and-drop the open folder from the Finder. It is important that you do not switch to the Finder — just drag the folder from the background.

[robg adds: I wasn’t aware that you could add folders to the Media Browser (and I searched here to make sure we haven’t run it as a hint; if we have, I missed it). If you activate the Finder, the floating Media Browser will vanish, so you need to arrange your windows such that you can see both the target fo…
