Change appearance of EyeTV 3.x on-screen editor area

News| No Comments »

Elgato changed the appearance of the OnScreen Editor in EyeTV 3.x. In prior releases, the editor was placed outside the recorded content, which was very helpful whilst dealing with subtitled movies and other important visual information that appeared in the lower part of the movie content. Version 3 made the editor a somewhat blurry background in this content area, making it almost impossible to recognize whats going on “under” there.

I managed to get rid of most of the dark grey parts by editing some files in Photoshop. All files are located in the EyeTV bundle (Control-click and choose Show Package Contents, then navigate into Contents » Resources):

Use Teleport with VNC for total remote keyboard control

News| No Comments »

One thing I dislike about using most VNC viewers is the inability to use commands like Command-Tab for switching applications, or Command-Space (my Quicksilver shortcut). A previous comment (and this hint) described using Teleport. And others have pointed out a VNC viewer that is built into OS X. This hint simply points out the beauty of combining those two bits of info.

If you use Apple’s VNC and Teleport, you can simply drag the mouse off-screen while still viewing your VNC display, and have full keyboard access to the remote machine. Command-tab program switching and launching is a lot easier, as is activation of the Dock if you have it set up to appear when the mouse is …

Back up FileVault directories to a Linux server

News| No Comments »

This is a fairly specific hint, but it might help someone trying to achieve the same thing. The goal: To back up a FileVault-protected home directory to a UNIX server, keeping the backup encrypted, and without logging off. Time Machine isn’t an option, as it doesn’t play well with Filevault. A previous hint I submitted does half the job, but the backups are stored unencrypted, so anyone with access to the server can read them.

The solution is to use EncFS on the server. This ensures files are stored encrypted (the password is stored in a file on the client, safely inside the FileVault protected home directory). Only SSH access to the server is required, no special encrypted volume is used (so the encrypted backup can easily be backed up itself), and root access is only required to install EncFS and add the user to the correct group. Here’s what you need to do …

Leech - A powerful yet lightweight download manager

The macosxhints Rating:

[Score: 9 out of 10]

I’ve never been a huge fan of download manager applications — for my needs, I really felt that Firefox plus the Download Statusbar did everything I’d ever need relative to downloads. Then I spent some time using Many Tricks’ new lightweight download manager, Leech. Leech is really best for those who download a lot of files; if you usually only download a couple of files a week, then your browser’s built-in tools will probably meet your needs. But if you download a ton of stuff, you may find Leech quickly becoming an indispensable tool.

What does Leech offer that you don’t get from yo…
